For whatever reason - and there are many - things may fall apart one day, do you know how to hold it together, for a protracted period of time?  Take, for instance, WATER.  Fresh water supply is not a simple problem.  And fresh water is increasingly threatened these days, as lakes dry or become toxic with global warming, (see [livejournal.com profile] w_a_r_m_i_n_g); as larger storms cause toxic flooding; as infrastructure fails, as it did in Flint; as blue algae and other pathogens choke off municipal reserves, as happened in Toledo; and as the threat of solar or weapon EMPs, or hacks, may one day take down electrical grids.

So, here are a few things you might want to know - about keeping water on store, about fermenting liquids, and other tips about surviving a chronic disaster, over the long-haul. Better safe than thirsty. Of course, you can find lots more info by searching the sites.

How you can help Illinois tornado victims -

Long-time LJ friend, [livejournal.com profile] glitterophelia, has been in hard times in the past. She suffered an illness which affects her cognition - just like me! - and also had a leg injury which put her in a freaking wheelchair. I really hurt for her!

I have sent her food, etc., in the past, despite my own poverty. She has kids.

Now, she is being forced to move. She has a, "new home," fund, but don't be confused - she is not looking for some sprawling ranch - she is on the verge of homelessness!

So - if any of you have some cash you don't REALLY need, please help at least one person, and her family. She tries as much as she can - and sells jewelry, etc., online!

Here ya go - here is her donation site - please help - http://www.gofundme.com/qabgbbc .

Hi. Here's an informal post about how easy it can be to start stocking up for an emergency, even if you have very little money. Over time, you will find that the more you stock up, the more money you save. It is SO unbelievably helpful. If you can't afford to stock up on 25 pound bags of food, start with 5 pound bags, as I did through Azurestandard.com. Here are some basic, really cheap and nutritious staples that I think are great to stat off with. Sunflower seeds may save the most money, since they deter hunger. (They can be mixed w/ healthier oil+ sea-salt). Corn cannot be guaranteed to be non-GMO unless stated. (All popcorn and blue corn is currently GMO-free). Oats, cereal cannot be guaranteed to be GF unless stated. Therefore, I am offering alternate links...

5# Roasted sunflower kernels, $10.90 - (Salted, $10.90 - Raw, $8.10 - Raw, Organic, $10.70 - Farm&Fleet, 6#, $5.97)

5# Split Peas, $4.95 (Organic) - (Regular, $4.15)

5# Lentils, $3.90 - (Organic, $8.00)

5# Cornmeal, $4.50 - (Organic, $5.45)

5# Organic Popcorn, $4.95 - (1# Nacho popcorn/ taco flavoring, $7.05!)

5# Mighty Tasty Hot cereal, $7.95 - (Bob's GF, $11.45 - GF, Rolled OATS, $10.40)

1# Nutritious, Iodine-Rich Icelandic Kelp, $6.45 - (Organic, *possibly West-Coast origin?*, $3.15 )

Total Cost w/o shipping = $43.60

Shipping from AzureStandard, (541/223-5640), can be FREE if:
1 - You are on one of their many delivery routes, such as along the NW Coast.
2 - You agree or arrange to pick up your order at one of their nearby drop-off points.
3 - You create and account and make your order over $50.
(Note - fresh veggies, frozen, cold-food, are all available via these delivery routes).

Two surgeries and some broken/decayed teeth have left me with many bills that I don't have money to pay. I have always given my money to help others when I have it, and now I need help myself.

I created a page at GoFundMe to help get money for my hospital and dental bills.

Could you guys help me by sharing my link?

If I can get $100 in online donations, then the site will include my page in their site search.

Here's the link: http://www.gofundme.com/HelpShel

If any of you can help with a donation, I would appreciate it.

If you can't donate, I would appreciate it if you could share my link.

Just a note, prompted by the super-storm expected for the East USA: Affected people should try to stay in touch via this community, and through LJ/internet in general. Although you may have to be off the internet, please remember that you can make VOICE-POSTS, by phone, to LJ. I'm not sure if these can be made to communities, like this one. Either way, if you are affected by the impending storm, just let us know here if you need any help and if it would be useful for any of us to try to follow your public LJ posts, (in your own jnl). Take care.

I felt the need to share this. This person is going through "statelessness." She was born to two American parents, but due to some document issues, and I guess DNA not being sufficient proof? She is not a US citizen. This affects education, health insurance, right to travel, a name, even her age. Please help by signing this petition and spread the word.

Thank you.

Not quite an Emergency, but the mod invited us to post here.  So thank you for any help.

My co-writer and I wrote a book for low income singles, two groups often neglected with budgeting books.  It's fairly cheap, but in the interest of making it freely available to those most in need of financial advice, we're asking you to ask your library to buy a copy.  This Amazon listing shows the ISBN number and all necessary info.

Since I was asked elsewhere: This is U.S. centric book.  I'd love to do editions for other countries, but one thing at a time. :)

Hey, safe holiday, folks!

Please note that I have opened up tags (keywords), so all users (who post) can add their own, as well as use existing tags. It would be great if, when you're bored sometimes, you could add tags to your past posts, so people from the future can access them.

Also, longish posts mostly go under an LJ cut. Just a reminder. Thanks! Oh, an PS: Many of you may feel otherwise, but no, "How to cook a turkey," is not a crisis. :)

We don't really think of protests, like the ones currently going on around the world, as crises - like a natural disaster or an accident - but they really are. For the people being pepper-sprayed; figuring out camping logistics, dealing with the elements; becoming injured or sick, or even experiencing poor or low nutrition, hydration, or ANXIETY, these events are indeed true emergencies. And, many of the people protesting are already at the end of their ropes, having lost their homes or jobs.

So, any info, ideas or help, going out to these folks, or networking to help them somehow, would be welcomed to be posted here in this progressive community. Protesters in need are of course also welcomed.

And, FYI, I recently created this new community: [livejournal.com profile] o_c_c_u_p_y

(This is not an official NOAA Advisory).

People on the East Coast USA, including Florida, and other coasts along the Atlantic, (northern):

An unusual swarm of earthquakes in the Canary Islands is raising the possibility that a volcanic collapse and landslide there could result in a Tsunami over 100 feet high. People near the coasts of the Northern Atlantic should assess their disaster preparedness, including the ability to travel inland within a few hours notice.
